HARA SHIATSU

Traditional Japanese body therapy

Hara shiatsu is a traditional Japanese form of manual body therapy.
Its source can be traced back to ancient China, around 530 BC. It is based on principles of traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine and treats classic acupuncture points as well as their connections within the human body – the meridians.

This therapy concept uses the premise of meridian energy flow in the human body. Every symptom or pain response is caused by blockages which cause obstructions and result in a lack of energy flow to the rest of the body. Resolving these blockages enables the body to subsequently regulate and heal itself.
Hara shiatsu is a direct branch of Zen shiatsu, coined by Sensei Masunaga, the founder of modern Japanese shiatsu. It has therefore been strongly influenced by its Japanese roots and represents a very traditional and classic therapy form, a rare occurrence in this day and age.
Consisting of goal-oriented, functional body work, it is an extremely effective therapy form, which has proved successful when applied to a surprising range of acute and chronic issues.

THE TREATMENT

A holistic approach is essential …

During treatment, the therapist will activate affected areas with deep, sustained pressure using fingers, hands, elbows or knees and mobilise them through rotation and stretching. This opens joints, loosens tensions and blockages, encouraging the body’s own detoxing mechanisms. This restores the body’s natural equilibrium, making possible a complete physical and psychological regeneration.
Through these touches and movements, patients will experience a keener sense of self, will learn to increase awareness of their own body and regain a sense of agency and control over their health and wellbeing.
Shiatsu is a holistic form of body therapy based on complex correlations explained in Eastern medicine, which enables the practitioner to positively influence and affect all somatic as well as psychosomatic issues. Our own behaviour patterns are reflected in our bodies, which adopt pain relieving and avoidance postures, build up tensions and present with various other issues. Positively influencing these somatic phenomena makes it easier to resolve the corresponding thought and behaviour patterns.

Alongside shiatsu’s effectiveness in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, it is also the ideal tool to support common treatment forms like psychotherapy and personal development.
Shiatsu always treats the body as a whole, never just one problem in isolation. Understanding energy correlations in the body helps resolve an acute problem’s entire chain of origin and sustainably influence a variety of issues, which previously may have been resistant to any therapy.
